Penang floods a 'major disaster', says state BN

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Barisan Nasional (BN) has described the floods that hit the state as a "major disaster", outdone only by the tsunami which rocked parts of the island in 2004.

State BN chairman Teng Chang Yeow expressed concern over the matter and said the party would continue to find a solution to the problems.

“I have spoken to Datuk Seri Zainal Abidin Osman, chairman of the Penang Federal Action Council. The Federal Action Council constists of various federal agencies, including the Drainage and Irrigation Department.

“I have asked him to form a special task force to plan for a comprehensive flood mitigation and drainage masterplan for the state of Penang,” he said.

Teng said the task force should also include Penang state agencies dealing with flood matters.

“A review of the standard operating procedure for flood relief efforts must also be undertaken in view of the changing weather pattern and availability of new communication technology,” he added.

He said the state BN would form a special team to visit all districts to gather feedback from all districts agencies and community bodies to improve the SOP on relief efforts and flood mitigation action.
