Penang police on lookout for KLIA shooting suspect

GEORGE TOWN: Police will increase surveillance, checks and intelligence in the state to look out for the suspect involved in a shooting incident at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 yesterday.

The suspect, identified as Hafizul Harawi, 38, is said to have headed north after the incident.

Police have since launched a manhunt for him.

Incoming deputy state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said they would increase surveillance and checks by mounting more road blocks.

"We will also increase our intelligence.

"We will hand out his photograph to our mobile patrol vehicle (MPV) to be on the lookout for the suspect," he told newsmen after the deputy state police chief duty hand-over ceremony at the state police headquarters here today.

The event was witnessed by Datuk Hamzah Ahmad Mohd Alwi, the deputy director of the Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (Operations), who replaces Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad as the deputy state police chief, alongside the deputy director of the Bukit Aman Management Department.

Mohamed Usuf has been promoted as the Criminal Investigation Department deputy director (investigation/legal).

Both Kedah and Perlis police have also intensified surveillance operations at border checkpoints to prevent the suspect involved in a shooting incident at the KLIA Terminal 1 yesterday from escaping the country.

Earlier yesterday, a man was left seriously injured after being shot at the KLIA Terminal 1.

The incident occurred at 1.30am at the arrival hall.

Police said the gunman was believed to be aiming at his wife, who is also his business partner.

The gunman had fired two shots, with one of them hitting the woman's bodyguard.

The suspect then fled the scene and is believed to have headed north.
