TNB sets up 30 mobile power generators in Penang's flood-hit areas

KUALA LUMPUR: Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has come to the aid of Penang flood victims by providing 30 mobile power generators to affected areas in the state.

TNB Senior General Manager (Distribution Network), Wan Nazmy Wan Mahmood said as of 10pm on Sunday, 12 generators have been installed and are up and running.

He said the remaining generators will be set up in stages depending on the need and situation on the ground.

"We are in the midst of monitoring the most critical areas before getting it up and running. Due to safety reasons, TNB has also shut down 38 of 4,852 substations located in the affected areas while waiting for the situation to improve in Penang," he said in a statement.

Wan Nazmy said once the situation improves, the substations will be reopened.

"We are keeping a close watch on the flood situation, not only in Penang but also Kedah too," he said.

He added that members of the public who wish to inquire about the power supply disruption can call the TNB Careline at 15454 for updates.

As of 7pm, 6,372 consumers have been left without electricity in various affected areas including Kepala Batas, Bukit Mertajam, Gelugor, Jelutong, Seberang Jaya and Tanjung Bungah.

The 28 flood relief centres, however are not affected by the power cuts so far.

It is learnt that apart from the 30 mobile power generators, TNB has also activated 21 generator sets in Penang to ensure electricity supply to vital places such as hospitals were not disrupted.
