Gua Musang bridge submerged by swollen river for 23rd time since construction

GUA MUSANG: A temporary bridge connecting Jalan Gua Musang-Jeli to Kampung Pulau Setelu here was flooded by the high waters of Sungai Nenggiri yesterday.

The bridge, which was flooded for the 23rd time since its construction, was closed to all vehicles at 6.30pm due to strong river currents.

Regular bridge user Sulaiman Ahmad, 41, said the water rose very fast and began to flood the bridge at 5.40pm.

He said by 6pm, only heavy vehicles were able to cross the bridge which was under 0.2 metres of water.

"I managed to use the bridge to go to town before it was flooded, but soon after, it was closed to all vehicles.

"This bridge is often flooded, especially when it is raining heavily. However, I don't know when the water will subside, but I hope it will happen soon," he said.

Daud Omar, 58, said the water would normally recede between two to three hours after the rain stops, but the bridge would be covered with debris.

He said people are ready to help clean up the bridge.

"We will clear the bridge of any wood residue to ensure that it is safe for road users," he said.
