Monsoon season begins on Monday: Met Department

KUALA LUMPUR: The monsoon season is expected to begin on Monday in Malaysia, bringing heavy rain for the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

In a statement on Saturday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) said four or five episodes of heavy rain are expected during this season, which will end in March 2018.

“Heavy rain is expected in Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and Johor in November and December.

“In Dec 2017 and Jan 2018, the heavy rain is more focused on western Sarawak, and northern and eastern Sabah,'’ it said.

During the northeast monsoon, continuous rainfall of up to three days could cause floods in low-lying and flood-prone areas, it said.

“If the heavy rains fall at the same time as the high tide, the risk of floods occurring is higher,” the Department added.

The public is advised to be prepared and alert to warnings of downpours issued by METMalaysia through its website www.met.gov.my, the myCuaca smartphone application, Facebook page: malaysiamet, Twitter account: @malaysianmet, SMS service 15888 and the MMD Hotline 1 300 22 1MET (1638). -- BERNAMA
