Kelantan police to meet Thai counterpart to discuss border issues

TUMPAT: Police will continue to cooperate with their counterpart in Thailand to curb cross-border crimes, especially smuggling, along the Malaysia-Thai border.

Federal police Internal Security and Public Orders Department director Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah said such cooperation was necessary to prevent unwanted elements such as smuggling of goods from taking place along the border of both countries.

"Apart from cooperation with the relevant agencies, we also need to exchange information from time to time as this will help both parties and soon, there will be a meeting between the state police and the authorities in Southern Thailand.

"This meeting is aimed to discuss the next course of action that can be taken by both parties in solving dangerous crime cases such as smuggling of firearms, drug and even encroachment of suspected Islamic State (IS) members," he said, after visiting Pengkalan Kubor today.

Zulkifli said the marine police stationed at the border are in need of new and sophisticated equipment to help them in their enforcement work.

"In Kelantan, our focus will be to improve the marine police and their work to secure the border.

"To ensure they are more effective, they need more and better equipment," he said.

On floods, Zulkifli said the state police have been making all the necessary preparation in term of logistics to face the rainy season.
