Penang records 131 locations of collapsed hillslopes on Sept 15 and Nov 4

GEORGE TOWN: The state has recorded over 100 locations of collapsed hillslopes during heavy downpours since September this year.

Works, Transportation and Utilities Committee chairman Lim Hock Seng (DAP-Bagan Jermal) said that 46 slopes collapsed on Sept 15, while the remaining 85 collapsed on Nov 4.

In both instances, the state experienced unusual heavy rainfall between five to fifteen hours.

This affected Jalan Paya Terubong and Jalan Tanjung Tokong heading to Balik Pulau through Teluk Bahang, Jalan Tun Sardon, and Jalan Jeep in Bukit Bendera.

"Currently Jalan Tun Sardon is still closed for remedial works and will reopened for traffic on Nov 15 by 5pm. Jalan Paya Terubong has already opened on Nov 7 and Jalan Jeep at Bukit Bendera on Nov 10," he said in his winding up speech at State Legislative Assembly sitting today.

RSN Rayer (DAP-Seri Delima) interjected his speech and called for the state government to set up a special committee to monitor all the projects by the Public Works Department (JKR).

He said that the state government was made as an easy target for non-governmental organisations whenever such incident happened in the state.

"People's life is at stake as well, so the committee must ensure that the remedial works done will not result in further occurrence in the future," he said.

Lim, however, believes that this is not necessary as JKR had consulted its hillslope division at the Federal office, while conducting its remedial works.
