Batu Maung building collapse: At least 10 similar incidents in Penang since 2011

GEORGE TOWN: Prior to yesterday's collapse of a building under construction in Batu Maung, there have been at least 10 such incidents in the state since 2011.

Not all, however, were buildings under construction.

The following are the incidents in question:

Oct 5, 2011:
A tower crane fell onto three residential houses in George Town, killing a 64-year-old man who had been sleeping in his bedroom.

The collapse occurred around midnight, when the crane, located on the site of a new 20 floor hotel on the opposite side of the street from the affected homes, went over from its base.

Three others — a couple in their 70s and their 55-year-old son — were injured in the incident.

June 7, 2013:
The ramp to the Penang Second Bridge which is still under construction collapsed about 7.15pm at Lebuhraya Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu in Batu Maung. At least one person was killed and three others were injured in the incident.

June 13, 2013:
A massive storm that struck Penang brought down the tower on the roof of the state Umno building along Jalan Macalister, which struck several vehicles and killed a truck driver.

Nov 13, 2014:
A section of a building at Western Digital in Free Industrial Zone, Bayan Lepas, collapsed on a 48-year-old worker, killing him.

Dec 23, 2014:
A 30-year-old Bangladeshi worker died on the spot after a one-tonne concrete wall fell on him in an unfinished show house along Jalan Sultan Ahmad Shah.

Aug 8, 2016:
An Indonesian worker died when part of a building under construction in Jalan New Ferry collapsed on him.

Feb 15, 2019:
Three workers were killed and three others seriously injured when the roof frame of a building under contruction in the Prai Industrial Area collapsed.

June 26,2019:
Four Myanmar workers were killed when the retaining wall they were constructing at the Lost Paradise Hotel in Batu Ferringhi collapsed .

Dec 4, 2020:
A Bangladeshi contract worker was killed and his Indonesian colleague injured when they were crushed by collapsing concrete piling pillars during construction works at a factory in Simpang Ampat.

Nov 9, 2022:
Three girls, staying at the Wisma Anak Yatim Perempuan Islam in Jalan Scotland suffered injuries when the roof of their dormitory collapsed.
