Tunku Nick not member of Johor Royal family: Council of Royal Court

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Council of the Royal Court has denied that Tunku Nick Tazuddin Izwan Syah Tunku Qadir, whose conviction for causing hurt to a national boxer was upheld by the Court of Appeal on Wednesday, is a member of the Johor Royal family.

The council’s president Datuk Abdul Rahim Ramli said the Council was reiterating its statement dated Sept 22 this year, in which it explained how only the Johor Ruler has the power to determine whether someone is a member of the Johor Royal family.

Rahim said that the privilege and authority to appoint or include any person or persons as a member of the Johor Royal family is vested in the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, as provided under Article 7(2)(e) of the Second Part of the Johor State Constitution of 1895.

"The (person in question) was never appointed, recognised or included in the Royalty list," said Abdul Rahim in a statement on Thursday.

The statement was issued following media reports referring to Tunku Nick Tazuddin as a “member of the Johor Royal family.”

On Wednesday, the Court of Appeal in Putrajaya upheld Tunku Nick Tazuddin's conviction for voluntarily causing hurt to national boxer Muhammad Farkhan Mohd Haron in an incident five years ago.

The court, however, allowed his appeal to reduce his jail term from four years to two.

The court also imposed a RM10,000 fine in default of one year’s jail.

It was reported that Farkhan, 29, suffered a broken cheekbone and other injuries from being beaten up by a group of men. – By Rizalman Hammim and Hani Shamira Shahrudin
