Ample supply of medicine; medical officers on standby for flooding: Health Ministry

BALIK PULAU: The Health Ministry has put in place the necessary preparations to face possible floods in the east coast states, including a second wave of floods in Penang.

Deputy Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said there were amply supplies of medicine and medical officers if the floods happen concurrently.

He said, if need be, medical officers from other states will also be mobilised.

"We are ever ready. Moreover, we have ample supplies of medicine and medical officers when the floods hit the east coast states annually.

"However, the preparations this time around also take into account a possible second wave of floods in Penang," he told newsmen after opening an entrepreneur symposium here Friday.

The symposium, jointly organised by Amanah Ikhtiar, was also attended by Penang Amanah Ikhtiar manager Mohd Fauzi Othman.

A 17-hour storm on Nov 4 paralysed 80 per cent of the state, triggering a mega flood and landslides.

Thousand were displaced while seven casualties were reported.

Meanwhile, Dr Hilmi said all hospitals and health clinics, affected by the major floods have since resumed operations as normal.

"The losses suffered are also minimal as the floodwaters did not rise to a dangerous level. Also, all equipment and medicine supplies were not affected," he added.

Besides Penang Hospital, also affected were the Mak Mandin Health Clinic, Lahar Yooi Rural Clinic, Perai Health Clinic and Taman Seri Delima 1Malaysia Clinic.
