KUALA LUMPUR: Residents at Jalan Medang Tanduk, Bukit Bandaraya here are concerned that a landslip which occurred in their area on Saturday night is a prelude to a bigger disaster.
The busy road was temporarily closed on Sunday morning due to the landslip, which occurred at 11.30pm following a downpour.
Checks at the site on Sunday at noon revealed a number of City Hall workers clearing rocks and soil covering a bend along Jalan Medang Tanduk with the help of a bulldozer.
Just a few metres above the slope, at the top of the hill, is an under-construction condominium, which some residents fear could have contributed to the landslip.
Resident Lim Hong Liang, 50, said a similar landslip occurred in 2011, when the construction was in its early stages.
"The last time (this occurred), the Residents' Association here lodged a report with City Hall, which then liaised with the landowner to rectify the problem.
"But no significant work has been done to stabilise the slope and stop the erosion.
“(City Hall) cannot (just) keep clearing rocks from the road. The slopes must be stabilised before another incident happens and claims lives," he said.
Lim said luckily, the incident did not happen during rush hour when the road sees a high volume of traffic.
Meanwhile, a City Hall worker known only as Yuzaidi said the team had inspected the area around the slope, including the almost-completed condominium, and ruled out the development as the cause of the incident.
"The condominium is quite a distance (away)… about 15 metres from the slope.
“So far, our checks (suggest) that the landslip was caused by the downpour. Nonetheless, City Hall will find a solution to stop the erosion from recurring," he said.
