All round assessment to bring out the best in pupils

KANGAR: Adlishah Iskandar Sharilfudin did not score straight As but he was not in despair.

Like most of the 124 Year Six pupils of SK Indera, Adlishah was all smiles when he collected his Primary School Assessment Report.

Although he did not obtain many As in the six subjects that he had sat for, the boy had a reason celebrate for scoring four star in the co curriculum and sports assessment.

Unlike the previous Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) where straight As students would be at the centre of attention, the mood was different this time around as many candidates are happy that their strength in other aspects were being recognised.

Adlishah, who represented the school and the state in football and rugby championships admitted that he had butterflies in his stomach when the teacher was about to announce the result, worried that the result would be announced by the number of A's just like the normal practice.

However, the second child four heaved sigh of relief when the teacher just called each of the candidate and handed over the report without announcing the result.

"I did not score many A's out of the six subjects that I sat for but I am so glad when the teachers told us that the academic result is not the only focus in this new assessment report," he said.

His father, Sharilfuddin Saari, 43, he was still proud with his son although Adlishah did not score straight As, since the boy received four star in the co-curriculum and sports assessment.

In singing a praise to the Primary School Assessment Report, he said the new system is much fairer to the pupils as they were not being judged on academic performance alone.

Sharilfuddin said the education transformation is crucial to prevent those who did not perform well in their study from getting demotivate at such a young age.

"All this while, everyone be it the pupils, teachers and even parents are too focused on examination-oriented and it is not a healthy especially for young children who still have long journey to go.

"I hope that, the co-curricular assessment will be taken into account in the enrollment of students for full boarding schools, instead of just the academic results," he said.
