Starting early: MACC to introduce Gerah initiative to primary, secondary schools next year

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will introduce the 'Anti-Corruption Revolution Movement' (Gerah) at primary and secondary schools next year.

Its Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Dzulkifli Ahmad said this was following the overwhelming response received toward the 'Sahabat Gerah' initiative launched recently and now has over 125,000 members.

He said the main objective for Gerah was to instill anti-corruption attitude at young age and schools would be a good place to start.

"It is good to cultivate intolerance against this scourge from young. With such moral value instilled early, it is hoped that they will not indulge in such practices as they grow older," he said.

Dzulkifli said programmes such as 'Sahabat Cilik Gerah' and 'Sahabat Junior Gerah', both for primary and secondary schools respectively, will expose students to better awareness on graft and abuse of power.

"We want to create a society that is not only brave to reject such scourge but also a society that will not tolerate seeing others indulge in it," he said.

The 'Sahabat Gerah' initiative was introduced by MACC in May to increase public awareness on corruption and abuse of powers while trying to create a zero tolerance and a corruption-free community.

"Initially, our target was to sign up 100,000 members by the end of the year but it is a pleasant surprise that we have already exceeded the target," he said.

Dzulkifli said most of the members who signed up for the club/movement are university and college students and young adults.

"More and more people are willing to come to us with complaints because they know we are reliable and trustworthy.

"From what we gather, the young generation today despises these unethical practices," he said.
