Safety guidebook for religious schools to be launched in January

KUALA LUMPUR: A special guide book on occupational safety and health for tahfiz or religious schools will be launched by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in January.

Its chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said the guidebook will be launched by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and is an effort to raise awareness on basic safety knowledge to all tahfiz school operators, staff and teachers.

“Prior to the book launch, safety and health seminars have been organised by NIOSH at tahfiz schools around Selangor and Bangi on Oct 31, in collaboration with the Selangor Tahfiz Al-Quran Institutions Coalitions (Pinta Selangor).

“Around 100 tahfiz school administrators attended the seminar and received posters on safety and health tips for their schools,” he said.

"NIOSH has also visited tahfiz schools in five different categories with status such as government-linked or privately-owned.

“From the visits, we can gather information on the type of building such as a shop-house and whether it is rented or owned. These visits would help to review how the tahfiz schools are operated and how to deal with health and safety risks in the future.

Lee added that the data collected will be included in the book to aid teachers and staff to prevent any hazardous accidents at the schools.

He also said that the seminars will be held at tahfiz schools in Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kedah, Sabah and Sarawak.
