Prepare for the worst, DID tells residents near Sungai Golok

KOTA BARU: Kelantan Drainage and Irrigation Department has urged residents living along Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang to prepare for the worst, after the river burst its banks today.

Its director Kamal Mustapha said the water level of the river is expected to rise further later tonight following continuous heavy rain since Saturday.

"If the situation persists, the water level of the Golok river may go up to 10m tonight and therefore, I urge those staying along the riverbank to be prepared.

"Although the water level of other rivers have also gone up, their measurements are still below the warning mark," he told reporters after the state DID Carnival Day at Wisma JPS here today.

Also present was Kelantan state secretary Datuk Mohd Faudzi Che Mamat.

Meanwhile, as of 6pm, Sungai Golok was measured at 9.54m, which is above 0.54m of its danger level of 9m.

The number of flood victims have also increased to 891 people as of 6pm. They are now taking shelter at 14 relief centres in six districts; Pasir Putih, Tanah Merah, Pasir Mas, Kuala Krai, Kota Baru and Bachok.

Six roads were closed to heavy and light traffic since Sunday. They included KM2 of Jalan Sungai Mati Kerawang, KM3.2 of Jalan Kota Baru- Kuala Krai, KM4 of Kampung Bucit and Jalan Machang-Pangkalan Meleret.
