Tumpat residents advised to prepare for potential flooding after embankment breach at Sungai Golok

KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has issued a cautionary notice to residents in various areas of Tumpat, urging them to prepare for potential flooding.

This advisory comes in the aftermath of the breach in the embankment of the Integrated River Basin Development Project (PLSB) Sungai Golok yesterday morning.

Director Zainal Madasin emphasised that their team is proactively prepared for any unforeseen escalation in water levels within the affected region.

"In the wake of the embankment breach at the PLSB Sungai Golok project, the floodwaters around Rantau Panjang have slightly reduced due to the subsiding water levels in Meranti and Tumpat.

"Therefore, we have advised residents in these areas to relocate to temporary flood relief centres (PPS) if the water levels continue to rise.

"We are closely monitoring the flood situation and remain ready for swift response operations," he affirmed when reached for comment.

Earlier, the embankment of the PLSB Sungai Golok project in Kampung Lanchang gave way due to the powerful currents yesterday morning.

Kelantan Drainage and Irrigation Department acting director Marinamarican Abdullah said the collapsed embankment had a width of 20 metres.
