PADANG BESAR: The number of flood evacuees here jumped to 88 people as water from the Timah Tasoh continues to be released following the heavy downpour in the state.

In Titi Tinggi, 72 people from 25 families were evacuated to a flood relief centre at 8am today after the area was inundated by one-metre deep water.

Meanwhile, 16 people from Kampung Padang Malau and Kampung Padang Malau Dalam, who had been evacuated to Maktab Rendah Sains Mara (MRSM) Berseri on Tuesday are still taking shelter at the relief centre.

Perlis Civil Defence Force spokesperson said the residents from Titi Tinggi were relocated to the relief centre after the area was flooded at 7am today.

Meanwhile, Perlis Drainage and Irrigation Department director Abdul Najib Abdullah said the department is still releasing water from the dam following several hours of heavy rain since 2am on Thursday.

"We have no option but to continue discharging water from Timah Tasoh dam as its level has reached 29.7 metre, which is higher than its normal level of 29.5 metre.

"Yesterday we have reduced the opening of the water gates at the dam but we have no option but to discharge more water due to the rainy dry spell," he said.
