Rescuers come to the aid of elderly woman after floodwaters hit her home

RANTAU PANJANG: A flood rescue team today helped send an elderly woman, who was having breathing difficulties, to the Pasir Mas Hospital when she was trapped at her home due to flooding.

The rescuers comprised the police, firemen, civil defence force and SMART team brought the woman out through a window at her home, when her house in Kampung Jalan Sekolah Cina was submerged under 1.5m of floodwater.

According to the victim's daughter, Salmah Deraman, 54, rescuers have to carry her mother Mek Yatim out through the window.

"My 83-year-old mother has been complaining of chest pains and she was having difficulty breathing since yesterday due to the cold weather.

"I tried to help her by applying some medicine on her chest but it was not working. I then decided to call for help and they arrived at about 1.30pm,"said Salmah.

She said her mother was carried on a boat before was taken into a waiting lorry nearly.

"She was then sent SK Gual Tinggi relief centre before she was sent to the Pasir Mas Hospital," she said, adding that their area has been flooded for the past three days.
