Heavy rain exacerbates Terengganu floods; 1,476 people evacuated

KUALA TERENGGANU: More flood victims were evacuated in the state early today as heavy rain exacerbated floods in the low-lying areas of Kuala Nerus, Marang, Kuala Terengganu, Dungun and Setiu.

As of 7am, 1,476 people from 372 families are taking shelter at 12 relief centres state-wide, compared to 1,446 victims last night.

State Civil Defence Department director Lt Colonel Che Adam A Rahman said 824 flood victims in worst-affected Kuala Nerus are being housed at four relief centres in the district.

In Marang, 497 people are at four relief centres, namely SMK Seri Payong, SK Bukit Gasing, SK Marang and SK Pasir Putih.

In Kuala Terengganu, 81 people were evacuated to two relief centres there.

In Dungun, 45 people are at the Paka Civic Centre; while the number of victims in Setiu stands at 32 people who are being accommodated at one relief centre.

Adam said three major roads in Setiu, Hulu Terengganu and Marang are submerged in 0.36 metre to 0.8 metre of floodwaters.

Jalan Permaisuri/Hulu Seladang near Kampung Besut in Setiu; Jalan Matang Nibong /Kuala Telemung near Bukit Tadok in Hulu Terengganu; and Jalan Cendering/Bukit Payong near Kampung Sena Rendang are all closed to vehicles.
