Second wave of monsoon floods: Red Alert issued for 3 Terengganu districts

KUALA TERENGGANU: Low-lying and high-risk areas in Kuala Nerus, Besut and Kemaman have been put on ‘red alert’ for the second wave of the monsoon floods, tomorrow.

Terengganu Civil Defence Force director Lt Col Che Adam Abdul Rahman said that the phenomenon, caused by the close proximity of the moon to the earth, was expected to result in high tides and continuous heavy rain.

“This can affect the low-lying and densely populated areas especially along the coastal areas.

“Among the areas earmarked as high-risk are Pantai Tok Jembal and Pantai Teluk Ketapang in Kuala Nerus; Pantai Batu Buruk and Pantai Chendering in the city; and Pantai Kuala Besut and Pantai Kuala Kemaman,” he said.

Che Adam said the Survey and Mapping Department recorded the highest tide at Chendering at 2.889m tonight and 2.829m tomorrow.

He added the Meteorological Department had also issued an amber warning for residents in the affected areas to be wary of flash floods until Sunday.

“All village development and security committees have been advised to be alert and to refer to official advisories to be despatched via mainstream and social media.

“The respective enforcement and uniformed organisations are on standby to render emergency assistance,” said Che Adam.

Terengganu’s last flood relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pasir Putih in Marang closed yesterday.
