Kota Belud floods worsen; 120 people forced from homes

KOTA BELUD: Flash floods struck 26 villages here last night, forcing at least 120 residents to evacuate their homes.

Rivers have risen to dangerous levels, while several roads in town are inundated and impassable to vehicles.

The Tun Said multipurpose hall here was opened this morning to accommodate the 120 evacuees, with more expected to arrive as authorities continue relocating affected villagers.

The floods hit following continuous heavy rain on Sabah’s west coast yesterday, and the wet spell is expected to continue today.

In a statement, the district Civil Defence Force (APM) said Sungai Kadamaian has reached its warning level of 2.31 metres, while Sungai Abai has reached its danger level of 5.82 metres.
