Woman, 69, killed in Yan home fire

YAN: A 69-year-old woman was killed in a fire that gutted a house in Kampung Singkir Laut here today.

Fauziah Abdullah's body was found inside the house after the Fire and Rescue Department put out the flames at about 12pm.

The state Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Mohamad Mustakim Mukhtar said the department received a call about the incident at 11.40am.

He said a team from the Guar Chempedak fire station was immediately despatched to the location.

Yan Fire station chief Fauzi Shuaib said Fauziah, who is paralysed waist down, was home alone when the incident happened.

Her husband, Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, 68, had gone out to buy groceries.

He said when Ibrahim returned home, he saw smoke coming out of the house.

Fauziah was confirmed dead at the scene. It is understood that she died from excessive smoke inhalation.

The house was 90 per cent damaged by the fire and investigation is underway to determine the cause of fire.
