Mystery of Sarawak Hospital's 'missing' pathologist

KUCHING: A pathologist attached to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) has been reported as missing after he failed to show up for work as scheduled on Dec 8.

Dr Ahmed Mohamed Mohamed Sakr, an Egyptian, was last seen on CCTV footage at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2), after arriving from the Kuching International Airport on Dec 7.

The 62-year-old was supposed to fly to Cairo from Kuala Lumpur on Dec 23.

Dr Ahmed was engaged as a pathologist on contractual basis by the Health Ministry. He has been attached with SGH since 2009.

Police however, have dismissed any notion of foul play behind his disappearance.

State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Datuk Dev Kumar said police, via Bukit Aman, are currently seeking assistance from the Egyptian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to locate the man.

“On Dec 7, he departed for KL via an AirAsia flight from Kuching at 6.55pm. The aircraft arrived at klia2 at 8.40pm.

“Based on footage from the airport’s CCTV, Dr Ahmed was alone when he arrived at klia2,” Dev said.

“We have sought assistance from the Egyptian Embassy to check on the status of the missing person with his family in Cairo.

“As of now, we have yet to find any elements of foul play with regards to his disappearance,” he said.

On Tuesday, a colleague of Dr Ahmed lodged a police report after the foreigner failed to show up to work. Dr Ahmed also could not be located at his rented apartment in Chong Lin Plaza here.

Upon the instruction of State Police Commissioner Datuk Amer Awal, Sarawak CID took over investigation of the case.
