Family of late YTL founder donate RM10 mil to 103 organisations

KUALA LUMPUR: The family of the late YTL Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Yeoh Tiong Lay has donated a total of RM10 million to 103 charitable, educational and non-governmental organisations.

The donation handover ceremony was held during a private memorial event for the YTL Group founder, held today.

His eldest son Tan Sri Francis Yeoh Sock Ping, who is also YTL Corporation managing director, said the donation was in honour and memory of their late father.

"My father laid the foundation on which our family is built, inspiring us by his hard work, integrity, business acumen, wisdom and kindness.

"These core values are what continue to inspire us to continue his passion for philanthropy and serving those who are in need.

"The 103 beneficiaries represent Malaysians from all walks of life and reflect the late Yeoh's commitment to building this nation.

"I pray that we will be able to continue the good work which my father began through his years of serving his community," he said in a statement.

During the event, representatives of 28 organisations were present at the event to receive the cheques from the family.

They included representatives from the Heritage of Malaysia Trust (RM100,000), Breast Cancer Foundation (RM100,000), the National Heart Institute (IJN) Foundation (RM100,000), Mercy Malaysia (RM100,000), National Council for the Blind (RM100,000), Montfort Boys Town (RM50,000), United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) Malaysia (RM50,000), Sekolah Bimbingan Jalinan Kasih (RM30,000), Graduates Association Selangor (RM30,000) and Indian Athma Sakthi Association (RM30,000).

The donation to the other 85 organisations were given privately before the funeral service on Oct 22.

Yeoh passed away on Oct 18 at the age of 88.

He is survived by his wife Puan Sri Tan Kai Yong, seven children, 27 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

With a net worth of US$2.1 billion (RM8.8 billion), Yeoh was ranked seventh in the latest edition of Forbes’ Malaysia ’50 richest’ list back in March.

He founded YTL in 1955 as a construction company but had since flourished into Malaysia’s largest conglomerate with interest in technology, hotels, utilities, construction and property management.
