Weather alert for Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan as tropical storm Kai-tak moves in

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) has issued an alert on tropical storm Kai-Tak that landed in the central Philippines, approximately 556km northeast of Pitas, Sabah today.

MET warned that the storm may cause strong winds of 40-50km per hour (Sabah’s interior, the west coast and Kudat)and waves of up to 3.5m on waters off Sarawak, Sabah and Labuan.

The heavy rain affecting a few states including the north and west of Sabah which recently lead to floods is caused by converging winds and the high level of humidity.

“According to our observation, the tropical storm Kai-Tak is now at the latitude of 10.8 north and longitude 120.0 east, precisely about 462km towards the northeast of Kudat.

“It is expected to move towards the west with the speed of 20km per hour,” MET said in a statement.

Previously, MET has issued a weather alert for Sabah and Sarawak on Dec 15.

The alert has been updated today, with a heavy rain expected in the affected areas until Wednesday (Dec 20).

MET advised residents in the affected areas to keep up-to-date with the latest weather alerts via the department’s website at http://www.met.gov.my/; or Facebook and Twitter at Metmalaysia and @malaysianmet.
