Sarawak flooding improves; only 121 evacuees at relief centres

KUCHING: The flood situation in the state has improved, with only 121 evacuees remaining at four relief centres in Limbang and Bintulu.

In Limbang, 92 flood victims from 30 families are taking shelter at the Ukong Community Hall and Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Menuang.

In Bintulu, 29 villagers are being housed at Dewan Sukan Tatau and Balai Raya Sebauh.

A state Natural Disaster Management Committee Secretariat spokesman said most districts in the state are experiencing fair weather, although several low-lying areas remain flooded.

It added that the main river in Kuala Binyo, Bintulu, continues to rise.

"The level of several rivers in Miri, Limbang and Kapit is decreasing and (hopefully) the trend will continue, allowing floodwaters to recede soon," he added.

Meanwhile, 34 primary schools and 14 clinics are still affected, with the inundated Kakus health clinic still closed.

No students are affected, however, as it is the school holiday season.
