KULAI: The state Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry has received 16 more complaints on possible fake baby milk formula since a raid uncovered the existence of the item earlier this month.
Its director Khairul Anwar Bachok said nine of the complaints were received in Johor Baru while the rest were in Pontian (six) and Batu Pahat (one).
"The complaints were received from parents whose children had fallen sick after consuming the milk formula or had noticed some irregularities with the packaging of the milk formula that they had bought.
"In each case, we have taken samples from the milk formula in question and sent them to the Chemistry Department for testing," said Khairul.
Earlier this month, Johor KPDNKK seized 210 boxes of the fake baby milk formula, worth about RM42,000, from five supermarkets and pharmacies in several locations in Johor Baru.
On the results of the analysis on the seized milk formula, Khairul Anwar said they were expected to be ready next week.
He was speaking to the media after visiting Econsave Hypermarket in Senai here to check on the implementation of the Festive Season Price Control Scheme.
A total of 11 types of goods have been listed under the scheme in conjunction with Christmas celebrations between Dec 23 and Dec 27.
"To date, we have not received any complaint about traders flouting the rules under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011," said Khairul Anwar.
He said that between Jan 1 and Nov 30 this year, the agency had conducted checks on a total of 35,000 premises in Johor.
"Following these checks, we seized items valued at RM1.64 million and 769 cases have been recorded. From the cases that we recorded, 523 were issued with compounds while the rest were brought to court," said Khairul Anwar.
He added that the majority of the offences were under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 and the Weights and Measures Act 1972.
