Temperature plunges in northern Kedah and Perlis

ALOR STAR: The cold weather in the northern Kedah and Perlis is expected to persist over the next few days more, the Kedah Meteorological Department forecast.

The temperatures recorded here have hovered between 22.6 and 23 degrees Celsius during early morning, about 10 degrees lower than normal condition.

Director Rosli Zakaria said the low temperatures were brought about by a cold surge from the highlands in China.

"The temperature is still considered normal unless it dips to below 21 and 20 degrees Celsius," he said.

However, he said the temperature was unlikely to dip below 20 degrees Celsius, which was the lowest recorded temperature here in 2014.

"The cool climate is likely to remain for the next couple of days and we forecast that the weather will return to the normal dry weather by then," he said when contacted.

Rosli said the temperature was also kept low by the northeast monsoon wind, cold air advection and cloudy weather in the northern Peninsular over the past several days.

He said it was normal for the northern Peninsular to experience slightly colder climate between November and December.

Cold advection involves wind blowing from a cold region to areas with warmer climate.

The department has recorded that the temperature has dipped from 33 degrees Celcius during the day to 31.4, 31.6, 29.6, 31.0 and 27.0 in the evening since December 17.

In January 2014, cold weather caused the temperatures in several parts of the country especially the eastern and northern areas of the Peninsula to drop to as low as 17.2 degrees Celsius.
