KLIA's aerotrains still out of service; holiday travelers ferried by buses

KUALA LUMPUR: Aerotrain services at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) were suspended on Sunday to allow for emergency maintenance works following unexpectedly heavy usage between 8am and 8pm.

The service has yet to resume.

In a statement, Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) said that the aerotrains are still undergoing emergency maintenance works and are not in service.

However, it said that 16 buses have been pressed into service to ferry passengers between KLIA’s main terminal and satellite buildings.

“KLIA handled a high volume of passengers from 8am to 8pm (on Sunday), with the trains moving about 95,000 passengers during that period.

“Due to the heavy usage, the trains (were) retracted for emergency maintenance in order to ensure that parts are serviced for continued (smooth) operations.

“There are ample buses to ferry arriving and departing passengers, and the situation is currently being managed by the operations team on the ground,” the statement read.

MAHB advised passengers to proceed to the bus lounge where its Airport CARE Ambassadors are stationed to assist them with their journey.

It was earlier reported that disrupted aerotrain services had left hundreds of passengers stranded and waiting for buses to transport them between KLIA’s main terminal building and the satellite building.

In several videos and photos sent to the New Straits Times, the train platforms are seen cordoned off by ‘Maintenance in Progress’ tape, as hundreds of passengers mill about, waiting for transportation.

This is the third disruption to aerotrain services this year.

In September, MAHB managing director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said its two aerotrains, which have been operating for nearly 20 years, will undergo a major overhaul by the end of the year.
