Contractors to ensure safety of road users

BINTULU: Pan Borneo Highway project contractors and sub-contractors must step up efforts to ensure the safety of road users during construction works.

Bintulu member of parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said he received numerous complaints from the public, especially those travel to Bintulu for work.

“People have been telling me that the route from Sibu to Bintulu is confusing due to the lack of proper signages and blinking lights at the sites.

“They only see the signage when they are almost at the site or at a corner, which causes panic and confusion. The situation becomes worse and riskier at night or in the early morning,” he said here recently.

Tiong said there should be no compromise on road safety as it involved people’s lives.

“Apart from the traffic management system, the contractors must be responsible and clean the sites as well as maintenance works.”

He said he raised the issues with several contractors but received unsatisfactory replies.

“The road condition (during construction) is another factor that contributes to accidents. I don’t want more people to get hurt or even killed. Do something now,” Tiong stressed.

He said the authorities should withdraw the contracts if contractors failed to perform their duties.
