End of EDL toll collections augurs well for Singapore-bound motorists

JOHOR BARU: Effective midnight, motorists going to Singapore through the Sultan Iskandar Building toll plaza will no longer have to pay for the toll of the Eastern Dispersal Link (EDL).

Road users will continue to pay toll charges for the North South Expressway (Plus).

Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said the removal of the EDL toll payment was in line with the announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak during the 2018 Budget.

"Toll collections at the Sultan Iskandar Building consist of two elements, namely the EDL and Plus.

“With the abolishment of the EDL toll collection, motorists no longer have to pay RM6.80 for Class 1 vehicles, RM10.20 (Class 2), RM13.60 (Class 3), RM3.40 (Class 4) and RM5.50 (Class 5).

"Motorists only need to pay for the Plus toll fees of RM2.90 (Class 1), RM4.50 (Class 2), RM6.10 (Class 3), RM1.40 (Class 4) and RM2.30 (Class 5)," LLM said in a statement.

The 8.1 km EDL is owned by Malaysian Resources Corporation Bhd.

Only vehicles going to Singapore through the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex need to pay toll fares as other parts of the highway are toll-free.

A regular traveller to Singapore, Razali Tompang said the abolishment of the EDL toll payment was fair as the majority of the motorists were using the highway for free.

"I think it is a good decision as the only users who need to pay toll charges on EDL are those going to Singapore," said Razali who works in the republic.

He said it would be interesting to see is if Singapore government would follow in Malaysia's footsteps to abolish the toll payment on the Causeway.

"The Singapore government's policy seems to be to match Malaysia's decisions. Now that the toll payment on the EDL has been removed, it is interesting to see if they (Singapore) will also end the toll collections on their side," he said.
