Penang hit by flash floods after non-stop overnight rain

BUTTERWORTH: Flash floods struck about 20 locations here following continuous overnight showers.

In most of the affected areas, main roads are submerged.

As of 8am, up to 30 houses in Kampung Padang Lalang, Kampung Permatang Rawa and Taman Usaha are inundated by 300mm of floodwaters.

No one has yet been evacuated, however.

On the island, the northeast district’s Engineering Department said several areas are flooded.

They include Kampung Masjid, Kampung Rawa, Jalan P. Ramlee, Lintang P. Ramlee, Kampung Makam, Kuantan Road and an area in front of the northeast district police headquarters.

Sungai Pinang is reported to have reached its warning level of 2.53mm, while Sungai Air Itam is at its alert level of 6.1mm.

A high tide of 2.34mm was also reported at 2.48am today.

Meanwhile, traffic is slow-moving on several major roads as the morning rush hour gains pace.

Authorities are currently on the ground to monitor the situation.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department released a thunderstorm warning notice at 5:20am today.

It said heavy rain and strong winds over Penang and other states are expected until 9am.
