Flash flood hit Subang Parade following thunderstorm [NSTTV]

SUBANG JAYA: Employees of Subang Parade shopping mall are working tirelessly to deal with a flash flood after water seeped into the building following a thunderstorm.

Hektar Property Services Sdn Bhd, the mall's building management company, said the flash flood struck out of the blue at about 5pm.

Its chief executive officer Aldela Puspa Nordin said some of the shops had to be closed to avoid power trips.

She said tenants on the mall's lower ground floor are working together to mitigate the flood which caught everyone by surprise.

"All the water came in at once but everyone including, shoppers and employees, remained calm and followed instructions.

"We had to close a few sections of the parking lot because it was also flooded, but nothing too major.

"All the shoppers heading towards their car were guided through a safe route to avoid any incidents," she told the New Straits Times (NST).

Checks made by NST showed employees, security personnel and the management team coordinating together to mitigate the flood.

Aldela said the Fire and Rescue Department as well as the Subang Jaya City Council were informed of the incident.

"This is the first time that a flash flood had struck Subang Parade since it started operating.

"Thankfully no injuries were reported and we had everything under control," she said.

She said the cause of the flood is under investigation and the company will release a press statement later.

Subang Parade's Skechers outlet supervisor Suraya Ibrahim, 41, said everyone has been working nonstop to clear away the water.

"It happened while we were serving customers. So everyone was not prepared for it.

"Our shop's wiring short-circuited, causing a blackout as the electrical wires are located in the flooring.

"Thankfully, everyone remained calm because the water seeped slowly but in huge volume," said Suraya.

At about 7.30pm, employees were seen still clearing away the water.

Checks made by NST also showed that the mall's underground parking lot had also flooded.
