Retaining wall needed to avoid possible catastrophe, says Pepper Estate resident

GEORGE TOWN: A Pepper Estate resident, whose house was slightly damaged in a landslide incident yesterday, has urged authorities to immediately build a retaining wall at the area to prevent a catastrophe.

Housewife Juliana Joseph, 65, said it was a tedious and tiresome for her to go back and forth from her cousin's house, where she is temporarily staying, while monitoring the situation at her house.

After heavy rain yesterday at 4.30am, the earth from the hillslope behind her house came crashing down along with several trees.

Thankfully, only small portion of the roof was destroyed. However, she was advised to move out as the slope was declared unsafe.

She said her two dogs had to be left at the house as she did not have a place for them to stay at the moment.

"I have to go back to feed them because I have nowhere else to place them.

"What if suddenly there is heavy rain? I hope the authorities can quickly rectify the problem," she said.

Juliana added besides her, two other families have been ordered to evacuate their houses to make way for clearing up works.

But today, she said none of the authorities came to look at the site.

"I was told they might come here on Monday." she added.

Numerous low lying areas were inundated following the heavy rain which began since late night Thursday.

Among the areas affected in the northeast and southwest districts on the island were Kampung Masjid, Jalan P. Ramlee, Lumba Kuda, Jalan Patani, Astaka Stadium, Ladang Hong Seng, Kampung Mutiara in Batu Feringghi, Kampung Nelayan in Teluk Kumbar, Kongsi 10 in Sg Ara and Jalan Datuk Ismail Hashim.

The affected areas on the mainland included Mak Mandin, Kampung Sethu, Permatang Rawa, Padang Lalang, Taman Sri Rambai, Taman Desa Damai, Taman Siakap, Taman Usaha, Taman Impian, Kampung Haji Musa and Tanah Liat.

Several major roads on both island and mainland were also closed to traffic while others see high volume of traffic.

As of today, the flood relief centres were closed and the affected victims have returned home.
