Betong pepper farmers to benefit from 'Pepper Scale Up Project'

BETONG: The 'Pepper Scale Up Project' is set to boost the economy of pepper farmers in Betong, especially those in the longhouse community of Penyulok, Layar, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Betong MP Dr Richard Rapu said that a key component of this project, a Solar White Pepper Drying House, has already been completed, aimed at providing modern processing and drying infrastructure for white pepper.

Richard said that the next steps include installing necessary equipment and resolving outstanding issues to commence operations soon.

The initiative is a collaboration involving the University Sains Malaysia (USM) as a strategic partner and supported by TERAJU Sarawak, designed to empower the smallholder pepper farmers by integrating modern technology in processing practices.

Richard added that this technology shift from traditional methods to modern drying and processing practices is expected to increase productivity, adhering to proper practices, thereby ensuring the white pepper produced meets market standards.

During his recent visit to the site, Richard expressed optimism about the project's potential to enhance the local pepper industry. Representative TR Kelimbang Jamanexpressed gratitude towards the government for implementing such a programme in their community and anticipated that the Solar White Pepper Drying House would be operational by the upcoming pepper harvesting season in June.
