Fair weather improves Pahang flood situation

KUANTAN: The flood situation in Pahang continues to improve thanks to the promising weather.

As of 2pm, only 4,624 people from 1,259 families remain at relief centres at five districts compared to 6,661 earlier today.

All the flood relief centres in three districts namely Lipis, Raub and Jerantut were closed in stages at noon.

Only five districts - Kuantan, Pekan, Bera, Rompin and Temerloh - were still affected.

According to the Welfare Department’s flood portal, Kuantan remains the worst hit district with 2,976 people from 841 families seeking shelter at 17 relief centres.

Meanwhile, there are 1,392 victims from 349 families in Pekan, 141 people from 35 families in Bera, 110 people from 31 families in Maran and five victims from three families in Temerloh,

A state Civil Defence Force (APM) spokesman said the sunny skies has allowed more people to return home except for Pekan and Rompin, where the flood water still remained stagnant.

"The water from upstream is travelling downstream towards the sea resulting in little improvement in Pekan and Rompin. The relief centres in Temerloh are expected to be closed later today," he said.

Meanwhile, State Malaysia Youth Council(MYC) members have been deployed to help clean flood relief centres and housing settlements here which were hit by the recent floods.

About 80 volunteers representing various association and clubs registered with the council were also involved in cleaning schools which were used as temporary relief centres after all the victims had returned home.

Pahang MYC President Wan Emril Nizam Wan Embong said the volunteers have started washing and cleaning SMK Gudang Rasau and SMK Paya Besar so that lessons could resume as usual on Monday.

He said the members have also been divided to help at various housing settlements as most of the villagers will take advantage of the weekend to clean their homes.
