No obstacle to woman becoming Malaysian PM: DPM Zahid

SHAH ALAM: Any qualified person, regardless of gender, can become prime minister of the country as it is provided for by the Constitution, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

He said any leader of a political party who commands the support of the majority is eligible for the post.

Zahid, who was speaking to reporters after flagging off participants of the Antarctica Charity Run 2018 at the Karangkraf Media Group Complex here, was commenting on Pakatan Harapan president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail's statement that Pakatan is ready to name a woman as its prime ministerial candidate.

Zahid said that while he is strongly opposed to gender bias, the rakyat should be confident that what the government is doing is better than the promises being bandied about by the opposition.

"We must be confident that what the government is doing is better than the promises being made by the opposition. These include their wish to paint the sky," he said.

In her speech at the Pakatan Women Convention on Saturday, Wan Azizah said that the opposition pact is ready to name a woman as their candidate for the post of premier.

She also revealed that Pakatan has yet to make a final decision on its choice for PM, as the party has many eligible candidates to choose from.
