Introduce bill to ensure govt completes full term, says DPM

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has suggested for a bill to be drafted to ensure that a government must complete its five-year term.

He said this was to prevent political instability and any attempt to topple a ruling government before its term ended.

"There must be a shift in the pace and mindset of politicians, so political alliances which have received the consent of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to form the government must complete their term.

"We do not want what happened in the last Parliamentary term where we had three prime ministers, to repeat.

"The impact of this was felt on people, when we could not improve the state of the economy, coupled with the Covid-19 pandemic at the time," he said at a press conference after the Rural and Regional Development retreat here, today.

Zahid, who is also Rural and Regional Development Minister, described that period of time as a "painful experience" for the country, adding that for the economy to flourish, the politics in the country has to be stable for investors to come in.

"There is stability under the Madani government following the decree by His Majesty to form a unity government, and therefore this must be defended."

Last December, Community Communications Department deputy director Datuk Ismail Yusop had claimed that a purported "Dubai Move" was being engineered by opposition leaders and government members of Parliament to overthrow the government.

Multiple police reports had been lodged over the claims, including by the Prime Minister's political secretary Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin on Jan 8.

Several Perikatan Nasional (PN) leaders had denied the existence of the Dubai Move, including opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainuddin.

He had claimed that the allegations made against them were slanderous, adding that the opposition themselves were unaware of such allegations.
