Pahang districts begin clean-up efforts as floodwaters recede

KUANTAN: As floodwaters continue to recede, clean-up works have begun in several areas of Pahang, with only three districts still affected by floods.

According to the Welfare Department’s flood portal, only 383 people from 109 families remain at three relief centres in Pekan, Maran and Bera as of 9am today, compared to 407 people last night.

There are 306 flood victims from 85 families in Pekan, 53 victims from 15 families in Maran, and 24 people from nine families in Bera.

A state Civil Defence Force spokesman said that today’s fair weather forecast could allow more evacuees to return home and begin the task of cleaning-up.

He said the only concern now is Pekan, as floodwaters in the district are still stagnant and could require more time to recede.

Meanwhile, state Education Department acting director Dr Tajuddin Mohd Yunus said that 12 schools in two districts are still closed due to the floods.

He said eight schools are closed in Pekan and four in Maran, affecting 1,946 students, teachers and support staff.

Tajuddin said four of the schools are being utilised as flood relief centres, adding that more schools are expected to be opened by the end of this week.

At the height of the floods last week, 42 schools were closed state-wide. The schools were flooded, being used as relief centres, or had been cut off due to submerged roads.
