Police on hunt for MPV driver who ran down patrol cop on Penang Bridge

GEORGE TOWN: Police are on the hunt for the driver of a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) which rammed a traffic policeman on the Penang Bridge on Wednesday.

The 30-year-old cop was seriously injured in the collision.

In the 4.40pm incident, the policeman, who was on his patrol motorcycle heading towards the island, was trying to intercept a Toyota Avanza for checks at Km2 of the bridge.

The driver, however, ignored the policeman and sped off.

The policeman gave chase, and overtook the MPV, before the driver rammed into him next to the road divider.

The driver then sped off from the scene.

"We have retrieved closed circuit television (CCTV) footage from the bridge and have identified the car plate number. We are hunting down the driver as we speak," northeast district police chief Assistant Commissioner Anuar Omar said in a press statement on Thursday.

The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for careless and inconsiderate driving.
