Five primary schools in Sarawak closed due to floods

KUCHING: The ongoing wet spell, which has triggered floods in some parts of the state, has forced the Sarawak Education Department to close five primary schools today.

More than 300 pupils and 63 teachers were affected by the temporary closure of the schools, which were submerged under water between 0.3m and 1m in depth.

The state Natural Disaster Management Committee secretariat, in a statement, said two of the schools - SK Sungai Bong and SK Kuala Bok - are located in Baram near Miri.

“The other schools closed due to the worsening flood situation are SK Ng Bon in Sibu, SK Kuala Kenyana in Mukah and SK Rumah Ranggong in Subis,” the statement said.

The floods, said the secretariat, also affected eight other schools in Subis, Miri, Baram and Selangau.

The schools are SK Sungai Manong, SK Sungai Kelabit, SK Sungai Seputi, SK Pengarah Enteri, SK Sungai Peking, SK Sungai Anak, SK Sungai Buloh and SK Iban Union.

“The schools, however, are operating as usual since the flood situation at the areas are deemed safe for pupils and teachers,” said the statement.
