Only 619 evacuees at relief centres as Pahang floodwaters recede

KUANTAN: Fair weather allowed all flood evacuees in Rompin to return to their homes today, leaving Pekan as the only district yet to completely recover from the floods.

Four centres in Rompin – Balai Raya Setajam, Leban Chondong public hall, SK Tekek and Kampung Pianggu multipurpose hall – were closed in stages since 9am, as 294 people from 81 families gradually returned home.

SK Tekek on Pulau Tioman was the last centre to be closed at 4pm.

"The promising weather allowed more people to return home and we hope (this condition persists)" State Civil Defence Force director Colonel Zainal Yusoff said.

Though still flooded, Pekan has shown major improvement, with the number of victims as of 5pm at 619 people from 145 families. This contrasts with the 1,212 flood evacuees from 308 families recorded this morning.

Pekan’s five remaining relief centres are SK Sinar Mutiara with 375 victims, Kampung Lamir relief centre (55), SK Temai (93), SK Aceh (9) and SK Merchong Jaya (87).
