Children of Machang snatch theft victim mourns loss of loving mother

ĶOTA BARU: When snatch victim Maria Erianty Zakaria underwent an operation to remove the blood clot in her brain on Jan 11, her family thought that she might recover from her coma.

Her son, Muhammad Asyraf Mohd Zairie, said he and his siblings as has been praying for his mother’s recovery fell into coma following the incident on Jan 10.

“Since she underwent operation last week, her condition was stable and this was a good sign for us that she might survive.

“However earlier today, her blood pressure became unstable and at times, it increased drastically.

“My siblings and I were praying so hard but God loves her so much more and she died in front of us,” said the 21-year-old.

When met at Universiti Sains Malaysia Hospital’s (HUSM) mortuary in Kubang Kerian, Asyraf, wo works in Kuala Lumpur, said the death of his mother had shocked his family especially his three other siblings.

“They were very close to my late mother. They are really sad over her death but l told them to accept this with open hearts, and to take it as a test from God,” he said.

His father Mohd Zairie Mohd Zain said the family hoped that those responsible for Maria’s death would get ample punishment.

“I could not believe this happened to us. I lost my soulmate, who has been with me for almost 20 years.

“My children lost their mother, who was a very loving woman and she really cares for her family,” said the 48-year-old Universiti Teknologi Mara staff.

He said Maria would be buried at the cemetery at Kampung Hutan Rebana in Machang after Asar prayers.

Maria, 40, who was left in a coma after being severely injured in the Machang snatch theft incident eight days ago, died at HUSM about 9.20am today without ever regaining consciousness.

She was riding her motorcycle from Kampung Sri Rebana to nearby Kampung Wek when she was attacked about 6.30pm on Jan 10.

Police have arrested two brothers, aged 26 and 14, to facilitate an investigation into the case.
