KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- The government intends to have aged pipes replaced soon in five states where poor water supply is affecting consumers, said Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
He identified these states as Perlis, Kedah, Johor, Selangor and Melaka and said it was hoped that the states would cooperate in the matter.
“The plumbing system has been in use for almost 50 years, having been installed in the 1960s. The government is considering the best method to replace the pipes,” he told a press conference after an official visit to the National Hydraulic Research Institute here today.
Wan Junaidi also said that states with sufficient water supply could step up the supply to sell to the states having a shortage.
“The surplus water in the unaffected states can generate income for these states,” he said.
Wan Junaidi advised the people to use water sparingly and prudently.
He said people in Malaysia use 230 litres of water per day per individual compared to those in Singapore, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom who used only 150 litres.
