PJ police looking for wrong way driver on NPE after video goes viral

KUALA LUMPUR: A motorist, who drove against the flow of traffic on the New Pantai Expressway (NPE) in Petaling Jaya yesterday, was believed to be mentally unstable and wanted to commit suicide.

A police source said this was what the driver of the white Perodua Viva told NPE patrol personnel upon being questioned in the 4.50pm incident near PJS1.

"We were informed that the driver, a senior citizen, appeared unsound and was mumbling about wanting to commit suicide."

A five-minute video showing the white car being driven against traffic flow has gone viral since this morning.

In the video, several vehicles were seen avoiding the car and motorists were also heard shouting at the driver to use the correct lane.

An NPE patrol vehicle was also seen trying to get driver to stop but to no avail.

The driver finally stopped when the car was blocked by oncoming traffic.

A police source said after questioning, the NPE patrol personnel contacted the driver's children to fetch him.

He added that police have recorded statements from three NPE personnel featured in the video today to facilitate investigations.

Petaling Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Zani Che Din when contacted said police are still tracking down the driver.
