Kg Banggol villagers fear losing homes, lives due to erosion of Sungai Kelantan banks

KOTA BARU: More than 50 villagers in Kampung Banggol are living in fear that erosion along the banks of Sungai Kelantan near the coast would see their homes destroyed and some lives lost.

Ibrahim Ahmad, 32, said recent heavy rain had caused erosion to worsen.

The father of two said the latest incident occurred yesterday.

“My family and I were sleeping when the incident happened around 6am. The erosion caused part of my kitchen to almost collapse. I am afraid that if immediate action is not taken by the authorities, the erosion will become worse,” he said.

Housewife Nor Azlina Tuan Man said the erosion began 10 years ago but they had no other choice except to remain staying in the village.

“We have no other place to go with my two children who are still young. Therefore, we hope the authorities as well as the Kelantan government will help us,” said the 23-year-old.

The erosion, which is affecting a 200m-long stretch, was especially bad when massive floods hit the state in 2014.

Villagers the New Straits Times spoke to claimed the authorities have not taken any action to stop the erosion despite several complaints and reports being lodged.
