Residents fear house collapse from soil erosion near riverbank

KOTA BARU: More than 10 residents in Taman Haji Hadi are living in fear that their homes might collapse anytime due to soil erosion.

The residents claimed that it has been reported since 2009 but relevant authorities have yet to take any action.

Resident Mohamad Nawi Yaakub, 53, said last year was the most critical time for him and the other three residents as several new cracks had formed along the riverbank of Sungai Kelantan, close to their homes.

"My house is located about one metre from the riverbank and l can see the soil erosion has almost hit the back of my home.

"I have lodged the reports three times but no one seems to listen to our problems," said the father of two.

He claimed that two of the four residents who have been affected by the incident, had vacated their homes.

Housewife Harniza Yaacob, who is suffering from knee pain, said the incident is really a big blow for her.

"It is like a double mishap for me. First, l lost my husband after he died due to some infection in August last year and now l have to deal with this problem.

"My daughter and I have no other place to go except to remain here. Everyday, we pray for our safety and at the same time, hoping that authorities will look into our problem," said the 53-year-old mother of five.

Harniza said her late husband, Ismail Mohamad, who was a former teacher, bought the house in 2008.

Another resident Wan Nazman Wan Mustafa said the erosion has now spread to about 100m long.

"I am lucky that my house is located a little further from the river but the four owners who have been affected by this soil erosion are living in fear that their homes might collapse one day, especially during the monsoon season.

"They have lodged many reports including to the state Drainage and Irrigation Department but no action has been taken until now," said the 40-year-old who has lived there since 2008.
