Downpour triggers Jelebu flooding as Sungai Triang bursts banks

JELEBU: A three-hour downpour triggered flash floods in several low-lying areas in Kampung Juntai, Simpang Durian here today.

Twelve people from three families were forced to move to the village's hall at 1am, after their houses were inundated with floodwaters measuring 0.5 metre.

Jelebu District Civil Defence Officer, Md Marisa Aminuddin, said all victims will be temporarily stationed at the hall.

"Rescue and evacuation efforts were assisted by the Simpang Pertang Fire and Rescue Department, the police and the Department of Volunteers Malaysia.

"The heavy rain which began at 5pm and lasted until 8 pm last night caused the water at Sungai Triang to rise and overflow, before inundating low-lying areas at around midnight," he said.

Maris said the affected residents are expected to return home today, as the river's water level has returned to normal.

He added that besides Kampung Juntai, the department also received reports of flash floods in Kampung Petasih Hulu, Kampung Peradong and Kampung Chennah here earlier this morning.
