Conflict in Syria must be resolved: Zahid

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia will continue to voice its view that the conflict in Syria should be resolved and that the Syrian refugees deserve to return to their homeland.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the government will continue to provide assistance and contribution to Syrians who migrated to Malaysia.

"We have received over 3,000 Syrian migrants under the Temporary Relocation Programme for Syrian Migrants, which allowed them to stay, work and receive health and educational services in Malaysia.

"I would like to thank Malaysian Humanitarian Aid and Relief (Mahar) for their important role in successfully implementing the programme and providing services and support to Syrians in Malaysia," he said at the Brilliant Kid Refugee Children Empowerment Programme launching ceremony at Sri Satria, here.

The Brilliant Kid programme was created by Palestinian Cultural Organisation Malaysia and Mahar in collaboration with Palestinian Students Association and Syrian Students Association. The programme was designed for both Syrian and Palestinian children which aims to develop knowledge of refugee children, enhance self-confidence and improve their social and practical skill.

Zahid said the government is strongly again United States President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and that Malaysia would continue to play role in supporting Palestine.

"Our stand in Malaysia is very clear, that we totally reject this action. Malaysians feel that sancity of Baitulmaqdis should be protected.

"Malaysians, despite the distance, believe that Al Aqsa and Palestine belong to us the same way they belong to Palestinians. Therefore, it is our responsibility to protect and liberate it from occupation and desecration.

"This also requires us to take a firm stand that backs the Palestinians and support their struggle," he said.

He said the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, has continued to play an active role in supporting the people of Palestine and their struggle for independence and freedom.

"The Palestine and Al-Aqsa cause are very important for us as it served as a uniting force that brings Malaysians together, regardless of political or cultural differences.

"Muslims should also constantly be seeking for more knowledge as it is the most essential investment in the future of our ummah." said Zahid.
