NGO urges MACC, EC to form special committee to handle graft issues during GE14

Putrajaya: A non-governmental organisation Centre to Combat Corruption and Cronyism (C4) today urged relevant authorities to form a special committee to deal with graft issues during the 14th general election.

Its executive director Cynthia Gabriel said the special committee should be formed under the Election Commission (EC) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and should be tasked to conduct investigations into alleged graft cases.

"We have received queries from the public who are confused which agency they should report to regarding corruption during the general election because there seems to be overlapping of roles between the two agencies.

"When reports were lodged to the EC, the commission had told them that they did not have the jurisdiction to look into the case, whereas at the MACC, they were told the EC would be the right agency to handle it," she said after submitting a report on "The Roles and Functions of the EC and the MACC in addressing corrupt practices at elections".

The report was handed over to EC Corporate Communication head Mohd Sabri Abdullah.

Gabriel said the report could assist both parties in understanding jurisdiction issues based on existing laws and putting a stop to corrupt practices.

"The report also explains the roles and functions as well as the jurisdictions of both agencies to deal with corruption during elections, " she added.

In the past general elections, she claimed many issues were raised including money politics, but they were not investigated by the two agencies.
